Are You Ready to Learn Origami?

Do you want to learn origami? If so, you are ready. That is the only prerequisite required. If not, maybe you’ll be interested in learning why you should want to.

Got the prerequisite? Then let’s get started.

Step 1) First and foremost, you must make yourself familiar with the 10 Laws of Origami. They are essential to anyone’s folding experience, and are the basis of creating a neat, good looking model. Don’t get discouraged; of course you don’t need to memorize them all. Just take a brief moment to read through them and be sure that you understand them. This will be where you stand or fall in your origami career.

Step 2) The next step is to learn the origami terms. There are a few terms that are used to describe different kinds of origami folds, ie. mountain fold, valley fold, squash fold, etc… As in step one, don’t worry about memorizing them all now. You’ll pick them up quickly once you start folding. I will link back to each of them as needed in all my beginner patterns, so that you will not have to worry if you forget anything.

Step 3) You’re making great progress. Now it is time to learn origami basic forms. An origami basic form is a prefolded form that consists usually of 2-10 folds. As you try different patterns, you will find that many of them start with the same first few steps. Thus, to help simplify the instructions, those steps are replaced with a single basic form. I don’t think I can repeat this enough, so I’ll say it again: do not worry about memorizing these basic forms, just look through them, acquaint yourself with their names, and make sure you understand how to do them. You’ll find that after folding them a few times throughout various projects, that you will have memorized these origami forms unintentionally.

Step 4) Ok, now for the fun part: you are ready to fold your first creation. Go to origami instructions, for a selection of step-by-step origami instructions. Don’t get discouraged if you don’ get all the origami folds precise on the first try; it takes time to learn origami. But, if you want to learn origami, you can. Have fun!
